A Sad And a Happy Farewell

Farewell to our faithful assistant

Today is a sad day for us. After having been with us for 25 years, our dear assistant is leaving. She spends so much time helping others, that she has too little time for herself. In such a situation, of course, the thing she has to travel the farthest for will have to go, and that's us.

I'm glad I've been able to help her with some computer trouble, but that is next to nothing compared to what she has done for us. Except for the very rare times when she just couldn't come, she came to us every single Friday morning to help me bathe and to help us with whatever else needed to be done.

I hope that this is not the last time we will see her and that we will stay in touch. She will be sorely missed.

Farewell to the guestbook bully

Ever since I finished a guestbook for a website I maintain, I've been receiving blank emails from my guestbook. For now, that guestbook I speak of is basically a contact form which sends the entries to me, and I then add it to the page manually. It does mean I have some work which I might be able to automate, but it's a good way to make sure that it won't turn into a mess.

When the bullying started, my first idea was to block the IP addresses the emails came from. Then came the idea to find and inform the companies these IP addresses belonged to. Eventually, I ended up investigating how my creation could be abused and I made that kind of abuse impossible.

In case you're interested... The flaw was in the script that emails me the user's submission. Now, I made it so that it checks if the submission comes from the guestbook, and if it doesn't, it redirects the user to this page asking the visitor to contact me.

I've toyed with the idea of redirecting the bully to one of many Nyan Cat videos, but I ultimately decided not to. I may do that later. *grin*

As always, I hope you enjoyed reading this blog post. If you have any questions or comments, then please let me know in the form down below.
